Vacations In Nottingham, England

Bring to mind Nottingham and the vast majority of people remember the legend of Robin Hood and although folklore attracts increasing numbers of folk each and every year there is plenty more to the city of Nottingham than your would think. As well as Sherwood Forest, the legend of Sir Robin Hood and the Sheriff of Nottingham, the city of Nottingham is also known for the  industry especially at the time of the Industrial Revolution when it gained a superb worldwide reputation.

The Lace Market

At one time the center of the world’s lace industry, at the time of the British Empire, the Lace Market is, now, a protected heritage area. The area  features numerous superb examples of 19th Century industrial architecture. The Lace Market was not like a normal market, as such, instead of having stalls and salesmen, it featured a collection of warehouses and salesrooms displaying and selling lace. Following the decline in the lace industry the Lace Market became derelict but, these days, the majority of the warehouses have been renovated and restored for alternative use for example photographic studios and the likes. The Nottingham Lace Market is a popular visitor attraction.

Shire Hall

Near to the Lace Market you will find Shire Hall and the Galleries of Justice. Shire Hall is a Georgian civic building which features Neoclassical columns, pilasters and dome. The front of Shire Hall has, if you look at it closely, a misspelled word Goal rather than Gaol. Shire Hall has 2 well preserved Victorian courtrooms and old cells, bath house, a women’s prison, a prisoner’s exercise yard and an Edwardian police station.

Nottingham is a fantastic place to take a city break. There is lots to see and do around the city and a huge selection of visitor attractions nearby. Nearby places to visit include; Wollaton Hall, Newstead Abbey and Hardwick Hall.

As is common in all England bed and breakfast, accommodation in Nottingham is usually of superb quality at a fair rate and many people choose to stay in Nottingham for part of their vacation and then somewhere else for the remainder.
