Increasing numbers of folk are choosing to take local vacations this coming year. For most of us the decision is to save cash but is this the best decision or a terrible error? The city of York is located in the north of England and was, a long time ago, the capital city of a kingdom equal to most of northern England. In such an ancient city it will not be a great surprise to discover a massive selection of incredibly old buildings, but you may not expect the awesome sight of the Gothic masterpiece of York Minster.

The earliest York Minster was a small construction of wood in which the Northumbrian King Edwin was, in the seventh century, baptised. It wasn’t until the time of the Norman Conquest that the first sunstantial construction made from stone appeared on the site. Constructed by the Norman Archbishop, Thomas of Bayeux it was extended by Archbishop Roger who built a north and south transept. Following many more additions the cathedral was complete and consecrated in 1472. Inside features the biggest medieval stained glass window in the world. York has other places to visit including; Barley Hall, The Shambles, the Jorvik Viking Centre, the National Railway Museum, York Dungeon and York Castle Museum.

As well as all of the amazing historic and ancient tourist attractions introduced earlier, the city of York is a thrilling city enjoy a good night out or experience the theatre, opera or live music. It that doesn’t excite you then you could spend the evening in a pub there are certainly plenty to choose from, including; Old Star Inn, Kennedys Cafe Bar, The Bluebell Inn, the Slug and Lettuce and The Royal Oak, and, lastly, the Black Swan. Of them all the Black Swan is more than likely the finest with a superb atmosphere and sometimes having live music.

Like many other cities in the UK you will discover a huge selection of B&B accommodation in York ranging from budget guest houses to five star hotels. The Middlethorpe Hall hotel is a mere two miles from York city centre but offers superb bed and breakfast with private gardens, sauna, gym and steam room, and it is also possible to get a massage.
